FOSI AUDIO ZD3 DAC/PREAMP; FULL REVIEW

The Fosi Audio ZD3 DAC/PREAMP makes a huge impact at its price point!

The Fosi ZD3 is a dynamic project that has been developed based on the suggestions of several online users. This is an alternative strategy, in line with a method of crowdfunding plans and ideas that presents a comprehensive audiophile problem-solving DAC while creating a brand and sound quality that meets the needs of several “audiophile and music-loving specialists” at a very reasonable cost!

To provide designs that followed the fundamentals of marketing strategies, in the past, designers relied primarily on tried-and-true methods and rational thought. This traditional approach typically involved following a set of guidelines that ensured the cohesion and clarity of the messaging. However, a different worldview emerged here that emphasized collaboration and taking into account other viewpoints.

In essence, rather than depending just on one set of principles, the development of this product became a cooperative effort that drew from the creativity and expertise of other people.

The process often involved piecing together various ideas and approaches, which has resulted in a more complex and nuanced outcome. Most importantly, this shift also raised questions about the specific skills and competencies that each contributor brought to the table.

I have been testing and listening to the FOSI audio ZD3 for about four months now. It was inserted as a replacement for my Musician Pegassus and my old standard and favorite, the Mojo Audio Mystique X R2R which is considerably more expensive.

Using the ZD3 as a whole, to start, this little DAC (with preamp option) has made a lasting impression on what musicality really means, and at its unbelievably low price point! I can assert that it is a DAC/preamp that must be reckoned with, as we consider the alluringly high prices of many of the audiophile DAC’s currently on the market today!

Looking Deeper

The ZD3 is a compact yet exceptionally adjustable digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that boasts an impressive array of features designed for audiophiles and casual users alike.

Interestingly, (low-budget) DACs from the two camps, R2R vs sigma delta, are quite different sounding, and in my experience, there are some fundamental differences. A discrete R2R(my preference) is more expensive to make due to the need for low tolerances in the resistor ladder. An SD DAC just takes the latest and greatest DAC chip and builds around it with a proper power supply and output stage.

Due to their linearity, R2R DACs are prized in high-end audio applications for their transparency and ability to preserve the original signal’s integrity. Audiophiles often prefer R2R DACs for their natural and musical sound reproduction.

A NOS R2R DAC can, in some instances, sound much more natural and more musically alive than any DS DAC with digital filters and a corrective feedback loop inherited by its design. However, it must be admitted that there is no DAC design without weakness, and even NOS R2R designs have their own weaknesses.

Besides that, it’s well known that it’s not just the DAC chip that defines the sound. The ZD 3 is equipped and accompanied by five types of digital inputs, including chain, optical, USB, Bluetooth, and HDMI ARC, allowing for a broad range of connectivity alternatives to suit various audio beginnings. In terms of outputs, the ZD3 offers two-line outputs: individual RCA and one balanced XLR, guaranteeing compatibility with diverse audio setups.

The DAC also has a convenient trigger-in/out connection, which improves system integration by enabling smooth bus communication between various audio components. The ZD3 can handle signals with an amazing resolution of 24-bit/192kHz when using the coaxial, optical, or HDMI inputs. The USB input supports up to 512 DSD, while the PCM signals can reach an accomplished 32-bit/768kHz for those looking for even greater fidelity. It is important to note that HDMI EARC is not supported by the ZD3.

For users who prefer direct output control, the ZD3 features a switch that allows for bypassing the volume control, enabling a pure signal pass-through.

At the heart of this excellent device is the ESS 9039Q2M DAC chip, which is renowned for its exceptional audio performance and clarity, further elevating the ZD3’s status as a top-tier choice in its category.

SOUND QUALITY APPRAISED

The  Fosi Audio ZD3 was inserted into a high end reference system, (see below) and as such, can sometimes be described as having a slightly “warm,” “smooth,” or “relaxed” sound signature, which, while totally we found beautiful to listen to, some listeners at my home have interpreted the sound to contain a slight compression of dynamics, particularly in the midrange and the soundstage depth. mainly compared to the more expensive DACs on the market, particularly R2R-designed models.

However, this unit shines when playing program sources containing vocals, both pop and operatic content. Jazz selections were portrayed outstandingly, and the stereo image localization was on spot over the soundstage and particularly in the center image. It is clear and neutral, with richness in the midrange and a silky top end, which is totally engaging and preferred over that more clinical or “digital” sound many DACs have embedded into their designs.

With bypass engaged, the soundstage feels wider, dynamics are improved, and there’s noticeably less congestion in the mids. When the ZD3 is active, it almost seems to “veil” or barely compress the signal.

BASS and DYNAMICS

In all respects, the bass range is excellent, in terms of extension and power, well above what the asking price would suggest. The system, within itself, does much better, as one might expect, with electronic music, with which it manages to sound engaging and lively.

Even though some transients appear a little muted and less forceful than they ought to be, dynamic performance is still excellent. But none of this ever verges on boredom or irritation. Compared to my Musician Pegasus R2R/2 DAC, the three-dimensional image may be a little bit deeper and wider on the Pegasus. On the other hand, this stage seems to be comparatively steady, prospectively proportional albeit on a lesser scale, and generally quite opulent and convincing.

OVERALL CONCLUSIONS

Overall, taking into account that the comparisons were carried out with much more expensive competitors, this Fosi ZD3 is quite a sensation and at this price point!

The ZD3 desktop DAC offers a solid basis for individuals constructing their initial serious Hi-Fi system. Its balanced outputs ensure compatibility with many high-end amplifiers, and its preamp and DAC functions provide ease without significantly sacrificing performance, even though its small overall “compression” can shame a 30k or above audiophile system in some respects.

In this regard, the ZD3 desktop DAC/preamp offers outstanding value for money and certainly deserves a ‘BEST BUY’ rating! You can’t go wrong with this little honey of a unit; Highly Recommended!
